The Return Home to Beit Shalom. Yes, the Peace House

...Recent events and the failure of the peace process did not do the Left any good. It has become divorced from reality. It is time for a reality check. To the pioneers of Hebron, we welcome you to the Peace House. May He who makes peace in the heavens grant peace for all of us.

"Our correspondent at the 'Dispute House' tells us that the High Court of Justice has decided on the fate of the building -- a big win for the settlers," said the anchorwoman. Later a local resident was interviewed. "Here is one Palestinian who says that where there are settlers, there's dispute and tension. He will tell you how bad the Jews, er, settlers, are," the reporter said.

The newscast continued on and on. The rhetoric did not change.

To my fellow journalists and broadcasters, just who do you think you are? On what grounds do you unilaterally decide on a change to the nomenclature? Why call it the "Dispute House" if the owners call it the "Peace House"? It would be akin to calling the Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv "those eye-popping skyscrapers whose owners have dubbed them the Azrieli Towers." How would that sound?

What about calling Peace Now the "left-wing movement that has been dubbed 'Peace Now'?" We all know that movement's peace credentials are just one big hoax. So why call it the "Dispute House"? The media is once again doing the Left's bidding.

So what if the High Court of Justice ruled that the Jews of Israel were the rightful owners of that property? They own it, they can name it, but who cares, right? What matters is the prism through which the Israeli Left views certain areas that lie beyond an imaginary line, a line that allegedly demarcates contested territory that we have somehow usurped. Hebron, where our people first settled, has always been an open wound for the Left.

And no, this is not a "big win for the settlers," as the correspondents kept on saying. This is a big win for the lovers of the Land of Israel, every one of them. By that I mean most of the Israeli public. The Israeli Left has tried to tell that public what to think, to make sure it conforms to its belief system and sees eye to eye with it on issues pertaining to our existence in the land our forefathers desired.

The choice of words has nothing to do with any Palestinian propaganda. It is our national consciousness that is at play here. The Jewish residents of Hebron are duty-bound to file a defamation complaint against the media over their usage of the slanderous term "Dispute House." If this action fails to produce results, a civil lawsuit should follow. At the very least, state-regulated outlets that use such language should be taken to task through the justice system.

Refer to this building by its true name: Peace House. As the past 100 years have taught us -- especially the last two decades -- only if we stand our ground and cling to the land of our forefathers will we bring peace and tranquility. Territorial concessions have always unleashed terror and resulted in war and loss of life. Ahead of Passover, the Festival of Freedom, we must liberate our national consciousness; we must unshackle it from the linguistic and perceptual regime it has had to abide by since our return to Zion. Liberty is first and foremost about standing firm in the face of others who want to superimpose their perception of reality.

Recent events and the failure of the peace process did not do the Left any good. It has become divorced from reality. It is time for a reality check. To the pioneers of Hebron, we welcome you to the Peace House. May He who makes peace in the heavens grant peace for all of us.
